As a result of Mt Vesuvius errupting , Pompeii was left under a pile of ash, only to be discovered and excavated early in the 20th century. As I walked through the ancient worn cobbled streets of Pompeii, at the foot of Vesuvius on a freezing day in January 1985, pieces of uncovered bodies, artifacts and parts of buildings, lay where they were discovered.
